Step #1: Soil Testing

Person digging soil with a shovel in a garden.

The first step in the septic design process is known as the Probe. This involves digging a pit or pits near the intended absorption area. The purpose of the Probe is for the Sewage Enforcement Officer (SEO) to evaluate the soil profile and locate the Limiting Zone.

The second phase of soil testing is the Percolation test, which is designed to determine how rapidly the septic-tank effluent will percolate into and through the soil, also known as the Water Movement Rate. This is influenced by the depth to the Limiting Zone. The test consists of approximately six post hole size holes prepared for the SEO, who is designated by your township.

In the event of unfavorable soil testing results, a Soil Scientist may be recommended to continue the septic system installation process.

Step #2: Design

Rolled architectural blueprints on a flat blueprint layout.

We have an on-staff SEO expert who manages the majority of our designs, ensuring they align with the septic design process. On average, the design will take 6-12 weeks to complete, allowing for thorough soil testing to ensure compliance. A free quote is included with all of our designs, which also cover the septic system installation.

Step #3: Installation

Step #3: Installation

A gravel-filled rectangular pit prepared on a construction site.

Once a signed contractual agreement has been completed, we will begin the septic system installation process. Systems typically take 1-3 weeks to complete and must be approved by your township SEO before we can consider the system finished to cover over. This falls under the septic design process we adhere to.

Please note that systems cannot be installed during cold or rainy days. This unfortunate delay is a DEP standard we must follow to ensure a quality installation.

Additionally, we do not provide landscaping or grass seeding services; for those needs, we recommend contacting local landscaping companies for assistance.

Funding Options for new septic systems

We do not assist in obtaining this funding. However, homeowners should explore various funding options when considering the septic system installation, which includes understanding the septic design process and the importance of soil testing.
